A reflection on the conditions that help people work effectively together toward something that matters.
Good idea. What will help it grow?
ABCD helps school and district teams develop their collective potential by understanding Ability, Belief, Capacity, and Drive—how we work together and what helps a shared effort grow.
For district leaders, school leaders, coaches, staff, and improvement teams.

Independent conditionsThese dials do not divide a single total. Each condition matters in its own right and in relationship with the others.
Surface assumptions, gather perspectives, examine evidence, and choose a focused next move.
The individual reflection takes about 10 minutes. Team inquiry can continue inside existing meetings.
Bring individual potential into collective progress.
Our confidence that we can make a meaningful difference together grows through shared purpose, trust, learning, and action. ABCD helps us examine the conditions that support that potential.
Keep the human spark visible: what connects us, why this work matters, and what we hope to make possible for young people and one another.
Initiative Builder
Examine the conditions for a specific goal, initiative, or improvement effort.
Culture Builder
Examine how this group communicates, builds trust, learns, and works together.
Culture + Initiative
Strengthen how the group works together while pursuing a shared outcome.
These uses can overlap. Your group agrees on one shared anchor for each reflection.
Four conditions. One interacting pattern.
Select each dial to see what the condition means. No results are being calculated here.
Can we do it?
The knowledge, skills, clarity, understanding, and expertise needed to carry out the work successfully.
A × B × C × D → Efficacy
ABCD uses multiplication conceptually because the conditions interact. Substantial strength in several areas can coexist with a constrained condition that affects implementation—but the lowest score is not automatically “the problem.”
The pattern, relationships among dimensions, context, variation, and other evidence begin the conversation.
ABCD is a lens, not a rating.
ABCD is not designed to grade individuals, leaders, schools, or districts. It offers a structured way to examine the conditions surrounding a specific improvement effort and understand what may be helping—or getting in the way—of successful implementation.
Evidence begins the conversation. Learning shapes the action.
ABCD surfaces conditions to strengthen. Continue with your existing improvement process, or use this inquiry journey to investigate, test, learn, and adjust.
Surface current thinking
Clarify the improvement effort, name the problem of practice, and capture assumptions before examining results.
Examine the evidence
Notice the ABCD pattern, alignment, variation, and surprises before explaining or solving.
Learn through action
Develop a possible theory, test a focused move, learn from evidence, and decide what comes next.
The inquiry structure is informed by the Collaborative Learning Cycle / Data-Driven Dialogue associated with Bruce Wellman and Laura Lipton. ABCD remains the implementation and efficacy lens within that inquiry process.
How are you engaging with the work?
Choose the role closest to yours. This helps ABCD support your thinking without changing the assessment itself.
Explore a realistic eight-response demo.
Use sample data to see how ABCD preserves individual voice, shows group variation, and moves from evidence into collaborative inquiry.
